After a number of sessions in the car, Weeks became more and more comfortable, and also kept improving his times around the regional Victorian circuit.

It was an important confidence booster for Weeks ahead of the opening round of the Australian GT Championship at the Clipsal 500 in just over a fortnight’s time.

“We completely solved the high-speed aero instability we had at Mallala in our last test, and the car was excellent,” Weeks said. “The power-down was particularly good, and it was handling really well through all of the low-speed corners and also the high-speed sweeper. I can’t really fault the car, because it works so well in every department.”

The weather throughout the day was less than ideal for racing, with the ambient temperature reaching 31 degrees and the track temperature climbing well above 50 degrees. Despite the high temperatures, Weeks was able to set very consistent lap times, even on an old set of tyres.

“The car was very easy to drive consistently, which is important because of all the one hour races in the GT Championship this year,” he said. “I was very impressed with just how easy it was to set consistent lap times, even on tyres that were so worn out.”

Even with the high ambient temperatures, Kevin also stayed relatively comfortable in the cabin of the GT thanks to its air conditioning system.

“The air conditioning is better than the cool suit, because it cools you down by evaporation,” he said. “It’s also a lot more reliable; I know from experience that having a cool suit failure is not very pleasant.”

Supaloc Racing Technical Director Oscar Fiorinotto was also pleased with the progress made throughout the day.

“Considering he hadn’t driven a GT car around Winton before, he adapted very quickly to the circuit. When he goes back to a circuit he’s familiar with, like Mallala or the Clipsal street circuit, he will be right on the money.”

The Supaloc Racing team will test once more at Mallala next week ahead of the Clipsal 500 on the first weekend in March.
