Kevin Weeks and the Supaloc Racing Team have left Round 4 of the Australian GT Championship atPhillip Island satisfied with their progress and development of the Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 despite a disappointing final result.
Weeks qualified 10th after suffering engine problems that severely compromised his straight-line speed. In Race 1, he worked his way up to ninth position before the gearbox expired on Lap 12 of the one-hour race, and unfortunately the team did not have time to repair or replace the gearbox for Race 2.
Supaloc Racing Technical Director Oscar Fiorinotto remained upbeat despite the setbacks experienced by the team over the weekend.
“We discovered the variable camshaft timing wasn't working properly, which is why the engine was down so much on power,” Fiorinotto said. “We weren't able to fix the problem at the track, so we just had to live with it, but in some ways that was a positive because it allowed us to concentrate on tuning the chassis package and work on bringing out the best in Kevin's driving.
“The gearbox failure was obviously disappointing because it cost us some valuable track-time, but we still made a lot of progress with the car.
“Now we have a big break until the next round at Bathurst, so we'll be able to make sure all the problems are rectified and we have a fast package. Bathurst is a really big round for us so we want to go well there,” Fiorinotto concluded.
