Kevin Weeks and the Supaloc Racing Team are gearing up for a tilt at some of Australia’s most prestigious tarmac rally events, with the news today that John Allen has signed on as Week’s co-driver for the upcoming Lake Mountain Sprint, as well as the coveted Targa Tasmania rally.

Weeks and Allen will contest the event in the Supaloc Racing Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera Type R. The car has been developed by expert Supaloc Racing engineer Oscar Fiorinotto, and the engine, suspension and chassis tuning have been optimised for tarmac rally events.

The Lamborghini has been extremely competitive over the last few seasons, including setting the outright record in the 2008 Mount Bulla Sprint. Only some misfortune has prevented Weeks from finishing on the podium in the last two incarnations of Targa Tasmania: he was running second outright in the 2008 event until a puncture ended his run, and he was leading with four stages to go before crashing out of last year’s event.

Allen is understandably enthusiastic about joining the Supaloc Racing team, and says the team’s meticulous preparation has been the recipe for its recent success.

“Kevin Weeks and the Supaloc team are the best tarmac rally team in Australia,” he said. “Their attention to detail is what really sets them apart from all the other teams; they dot every I and cross every T.

“Part of the appeal of joining the team is co-driving with Kevin. To be successful, there has to be complete trust between the driver and co-driver, and I trust Kevin completely, because he’s just an awesome driver.

“The Targa Tasmania is the jewel in the crown so it would absolutely fantastic if we could win it together.”

Allen also appreciates the differences between the Lamborghini and some of the other vehicles he has been a passenger in for tarmac rally events.

“The Lambo sounds like an F1 car, and it just has awesome grip off the line. It rockets off the mark so quickly that it’s hard not to let your pace notes hit you in the head!”

The Lake Mountain Sprint will be held on March 20-21, followed by Targa Tasmania from April 27 – May 2.
